Demographic trends and the development of quantitative and qualitative housing needs

A report prepared by the Population Research Centre of the University of Groningen on behalf of AEDES Friesland and ODW (Groningen, Drenthe) is in front of you. There is a great need for the housing corporations in the north of the country to get clear answers to a number of questions about the future development of the population in the northern regions, which arose as a result of the Derks report: ‘Structural Population Decline’. This highly publicised report from 2006 stated that many regions will face population decline in the future, as well as a decrease in housing needs.
Reliable information about the future course of the population and the housing needs is of course of great strategic value for a housing corporation. The aim of this research is therefore to provide clarity in the expectations about the future course of the population and of the housing needs for the northern provinces.
