Description
Pricing car traffic can have positive effects on the flow of traffic, on the accessibility of and for people and companies, and on the Dutch economy.
Flow improves most if a so-called flat kilometre charge is combined with an additional charge at peak times on the busiest roads while the revenue from these charges is invested in new infrastructure.
The environment and road safety also benefit from the kilometre and peak-rate charges, but not from new infrastructure. However, if all costs and revenues are weighed against each other, the combination of price policy and investment in new infrastructure appears to have the most positive effects on prosperity.
These are the main findings of the RPB study entitled ‘Elevation of road traffic. The effects on traffic flow, accessibility and the economy’.
