Description

This report deals with a feasibility study into geothermal heat extraction from the Slochteren Sandstone for the planned city expansion Groningen Meerstad. This feasibility study was carried out within the framework of the subsidy program transition research heat of SenterNovem. SenterNovem asked TNO-NITG in March 2004 to what extent the subsurface of Groningen offers opportunities for the extraction of geothermal energy. A first quick scan indicated that there are aquifers in the subsurface of Groningen that could be suitable for geothermal heat extraction, but with the cavern that these aquifers also serve as the reservoir of rock in which the Groningen gas field is located. The municipality of Groningen then asked TNO-NITG to: * to carry out an overall detailed analysis of the possible water production and the extent of the associated heat production from sands of the Slochteren Formation, * to give an indication of the location of a geothermal doublet (both the above-ground extraction location and the underground location of the doublet), also in view of a possible interference with the Groningen gas field, * to make a global cost estimate for the realization of a geothermal energy project. In order to answer the above questions, the following research has been carried out: * On the basis of existing data, an inventory has been made of the aquifers found under Groningen and the most important characteristics of the aquifers for geothermal energy extraction have been selected, * Mapping the expected heat demand in the near future * Indicating a possible location of a doublet, taking into account the locations of the heat demand and the characteristics of the subsurface, in particular the location of the Groningen gas field, * Calculating global investment costs.
