Description
The analysis focuses on monitoring nutrient concentrations in coastal and transitional water bodies in the Western Channel and the Bay of Biscay.
The term ‘nutrients’ refers to all the compounds necessary for the nutrition of phytoplankton, the main ones being nitrate, nitrite, ammonium, phosphate and silicate. Nutrients are not directly toxic to the marine environment, but excessive flows discharged into coastal areas can be considered as a pressure causing indirect nuisances that can lead to eutrophication.
The nutrient WFD indicator is defined as the combination of the indices: ammonium, nitrate and nitrite. The metric of the index is the concentration normalised to 33 salinity of all the measurements taken, relativised in relation to a primary symptom of eutrophication: chlorophyll-a. Nutrient determinations are made on samples taken monthly 4 to 12 times a year.
