Description
The analysis focuses on monitoring nutrient concentrations in coastal and transitional water bodies from the Belgian border to the Baie de Somme. The term ‘nutrients’ refers to all the compounds necessary for the nutrition of phytoplankton, the main ones being nitrate, nitrite, ammonium, phosphate and silicate. The nutrient WFD indicator is defined as the combination of the indices: ammonium, nitrate, nitrite, phosphate and silicate. To date, the relevance of the phosphate and silicate indices is still being studied. Thus, the nutrient indicator presented in this first assessment report
incorporates only dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) concentrations, i.e. the sum of ammonium + nitrate + nitrite. Nutrient assays are done on samples taken monthly 4 to 12 times a year. The most recent assessment of the state of this element is presented in the Artois-Picardie WFD Atlas. Previous reports are available in annual archives.
