Description
The canton within the meaning of INSEE is an administrative subdivision of a department.
The canton is a territorial subdivision of the borough. It is the electoral district in which a general councillor is elected.
The cantons, like the departments, were created by the law of 22 December 1789. In most cases, the cantons comprise several municipalities. But the cantons do not always respect the municipal boundaries: the most populated municipalities belong to several cantons. A township belongs to one and only one arrondissement.
Layer different from that of the pseudo-cantons of the Carto comic book: layer (#0058) N_CANTON_BDC_ddd because the latter contains the canton of attachment of the municipalities.
