Description
The canton is the constituency serving as the framework for the election of departmental councils, formerly General Councils, defined by the Act of 17 May 2013. This law requires the cantons to be redistributed according to demographic criteria, and their number is halved; each of the new cantons elects two elected representatives, necessarily of different sexes, by binominal ballot.
The composition of the new cantons is described in decrees published in February 2014. The cantons are no longer necessarily territorial subdivisions of the boroughs.In most cases, the cantons comprise several municipalities. But the cantons do not always respect the municipal boundaries: they may straddle several municipalities or be included strictly in a commune.
The first departmental council elections, known as “departmental elections”, formerly cantonal elections, took place in March 2015.
There are now no canton chiefs but centralising offices, which operate during the departmental elections. (INSEE)
