Remarkable wetlands are wetlands with exceptional biodiversity. They correspond to wetlands included in inventories of sensitive natural areas of at least departmental interest note, or failing that, natural areas of floristic and faunistic ecological interest (ZNIEFF), Natura 2000 areas or areas concerned by a biotope protection order and still have a minimum biological status and functioning. Their membership in these areas or inventories gives them their characteristic of a remarkable wetland. They require detailed inventories. The latter are already initiated but still incomplete.
So-called remarkable areas have been identified in the Rhine-Meuse basin and are priorities for conservation actions. They represent 35 000 ha, i.e. 4.2 % of the area of the basin divided into:
40 % of humid forests;
35 % wet grassland;
18 % ponds and ponds;
6 % of marshes and peatlands.
