Areas contaminated by the red palm weevil in Languedoc-Roussillon (July 2015)
Description
The layer represents the contaminated areas around the positive traps and outbreaks detected for the red palm weevil (Rhynchophorus ferrugineus). The contaminated area corresponds to an area of 100 metres around a point of recent detection of the red palm weevil. The red palm weevil is currently one of the most important palm pests. In France at the end of 2012, it was listed in three regions: Corsica, Languedoc-Roussillon and Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur.
The red weevil attacks exclusively on palm trees. In the Mediterranean regions, the two most sensitive varieties are the date palm “Phoenix dactylifera” and the Canary palm “Phoenix canariensis”. The palm dies suddenly, the first symptoms of attack appear late after the infestation.
