Drilling from the extraction of the basement bank (BSS) in the department of Orne in 2011.
Description
All data on the land’s underground works (drills, surveys, wells and sources) are collected for storage in a database, the BSS, organised and managed by the BRGM.
In France, surface geology is beginning to be well known with most of the knowledge gathered in geological maps. For the basement, the more fragmentary information is collected in the basement database, which provides information on more than 700,000 underground works and works carried out for more than a century. In order to find and exploit buried natural resources (water, oil, mineral resources), geotechnical studies (infrastructure and development works), geothermal, and scientific research (knowledge of the subsoil, processes and mechanisms behind different geological phenomena), different works are carried out which are an important source of subsoil information.
As of 1958, the mining code requires all works over 10 metres deep to be reported, while in 2003 the Environmental Code stipulates that work reports on all works “conducted for research, monitoring or sampling in groundwater” must include a BSS number, thus complementing all data. The database, declared to the CNIL, contains raw administrative and geological information:name of owner, location, description of geological levels encountered, digitised documents, technical equipment of the works, etc.
On InfoTerre, the BSS therefore makes available to the public more than 700,000 descriptions of underground works accompanied by a set of more than 2,000,000 digitised documents. Almost half of the works have a brief geological cut, and about 20 % have an elaborate geological cut verified by a professional.
