Colonies of Benevolence – World Heritage Buffer Zones
Description
World Heritage Colonies of Benevolence is not a contiguous area, but it consists of separate sites: Veenhuizen, Frederiksoord-Wilhelminaoord in the Netherlands and Rootel in Belgium. The areas that are part of the World Heritage Site are called ‘core zone’ or ‘property’. UNESCO requires that an “buffer zone” be defined as additional protection around a core zone. The buffer zones ensure the protection of the visibility of the monumental buildings and the maintenance of the agricultural landscape with its linear structure, special tree lanes and waterways. In the case of planning development in the buffer zones, the effects on the World Heritage must be considered spatially.
