Phosphate binding capacity (history)
Description
The Provincial Environment Plan Drenthe II, adopted by the Provincial Council of the Netherlands on 7 July 2004, includes on map D the phosphate binding capacity at a highest groundwater level. The extent to which agricultural land leaches phosphate to surface water depends on the capacity of the soil to retain phosphate (phosphate binding capacity) and on the flow of water through the soil to groundwater and surface water. In limeless soils, phosphate is mainly bound to iron and aluminium hydroxides. In calcareous soils, phosphate is mainly fixed in the form of calcium phosphates. The risk of phosphate leaching to groundwater and surface water increases as the soil becomes more saturated with phosphate and the groundwater level is higher.
