Accumulation of pressures that can cause the entry of garbage into the sea from land in the Canary Islands Demarcation (EM CAN PRE Terrestrial Garbage)
Description
To characterize land-based marine litter as pressure, the following sources have been identified: coastal settlements, ports, bathing areas and municipal solid waste landfills.
First, all cells located less than 10 km from identified garbage sources have been selected.Next, it has been added to each cell:- The population associated with the population nuclei located in the radius of 10 km.
- The area of ports within a radius of 10 km
- The tourist population associated with bathing areas, assuming an average of 10,000 inhabitants / km of coastline in the coastal areas of the Demarcation.
- The presence/absence of a landfill (layer of selected landfills less than 2 km from the coast)
Then the population and port area values have been transformed to a scale of 1-3. In the case of ports, the surface values have not been used directly, but the following index has been calculated for each cell: Ports = [Sum surface ports] + ([Cell surface] / [Buffer surface 10 km cell])
In this way, the following scale has been followed (scales applied in the garbage index):
- 1 Ports: 0 to 1; Population nuclei: 50,000; Tourist population: 50,000.
- 2 Ports: 1 to 10; Population nuclei: 50,000 to 300,000 Tourist population: 50,000 to 200,000.
- 3 Ports: 10; Population nuclei: 300.000 Tourist population: 200,000.
Finally, the resulting values have been added, as well as the presence/absence of landfills (values 0/1). The final values range from 1 to 10:
Very High: 9 to 10 / High: 7 to 8 / Medium: 5 to 6 / Low: 3 to 4 / Very Low: 0 to 2.
