Description

Heavy metals (e.g. cadmium) are bound to varying degrees in soils. The binding takes place by adsorption on exchangers (clay minerals, oxides) or by binding to organic soil components (humus) depending on the pH value. The pH value corresponds to a soil-specific pH optimum for agricultural use and to the current average site-specific acidification level under forests for forestry use. Due to the soil properties clay content, humus content, pH value and iron oxide content, the relative binding strength of the soils for the individual heavy metals can be assessed. The map shows the relative binding strength of the topsoil (FSMo) exemplarily for cadmium (due to its relatively representative properties for heavy metals) and is based on the soil map of Lower Saxony 1: 50 000.
