Description
For orientation in the urban area and for the unquestionable finding of plots, roads, paths and places with names are named and house numbers are assigned for buildings. They serve for orientation in the urban area and fulfil an order function for all personal or location-related data. The house numbers are georeferenced by Gauss-Krüger coordinates and assigned to the streets. They serve as a reference point for address-related applications. House numbers are awarded on the basis of construction applications, notices of construction measures or at the request of the owners. In order to be able to integrate new buildings into an existing house number sequence, it may be necessary to change existing house numbers. For the arrangement of house numbers there are two equivalent systems in Braunschweig. Initially, the so-called Berlin system was customary, which provided for a circumferential house numbering. This means that the number sequence starts on one side of the road with 1, runs uninterruptedly until the end of the road and then back on the other side of the road. After 1945 in the course of the reconstruction and the numerous new settlements in the urban area, one has moved to the other, the so-called Paris method of house numbering. In this system, the numbering starts at the end of the street facing the city centre on the left side with 1 and on the right side with 2 and then runs separately after straight and odd to the other end of the road.
