Tree inventory (incl. 3D)

Description

City-wide tree inventory based on the GSZ tree cadastre and the landscape model of swisstopo (TLM3D) **Purpose**: Data base on urban trees (tree sites and heights) for various applications (including Züri Virtual and Züri 4D) Interest in data on tree populations in the city of Zurich has increased sharply in recent years. On the one hand, the pressure on green areas and their use is steadily increasing. On the other hand, it can be observed that geodata is increasingly incorporated into early steps of project work, research and work planning. Digital progress favours diverse work on tree populations such as 3D visualisations and tree plant potential studies. However, the city of Zurich lacks a comprehensive, uniform and freely accessible work base (construction min inventory). At this point in time, the tree cadastre is the only available data set on the trees in the city of Zurich. However, it serves as a control and care application and is limited to the city-maintained trees. So far, there is no information on tree locations on private grounds. The large number of private trees and the access restrictions on private areas make it impossible to manually record each tree on communal area. This limitation can be circumvented with the help of swisstopo’s topographical landscape model. The model contains automatically derived point data from laser and aerial image data to individual trees. If the existing tree cadastre is supplemented with this data source, a nationwide tree inventory results. It is important that sufficient attention is paid to the inaccuracy of data. However, due to the lack of alternatives, this methodology represents the most accurate, possible approach to an urban tree inventory. The Park and Green Areas business unit is responsible for the Green City of Zurich (GSZ) to develop and maintain a data base on urban trees. Therefore, in order to promote interdisciplinary and varied work, an open data set on trees on the urban area (excl. forest) of Zurich, combined from the tree cadastre, lidar data and landscape model, is to be developed. The goal is not to replace or revise the existing tree caster, but rather to create a further developed data set based on the tree cadastre, among other things.
