Map of the Grand Duchy of Hesse around 1855 (HKGH).
The ‘Map of the Grand Duchy of Hesse’ was produced by the Maximilian Frommann Lithographic Institute in Darmstadt on a scale of 1: 280 943 published. Unfortunately, the specific date of publication is missing, but in two places the probable year of publication ‘around 1852’ and ‘around 1855’ is noted in pencil.
In addition to the typical contents of a contemporary topographic overview map, the present map shows the internal state organization of the Grand Duchy with the three provinces of Starkenburg, Oberhessen and Rheinhessen, as well as the railway lines put into operation from 1850 onwards.
