Groundwater dependent terrestrial ecosystems in Lower Saxony 1 : 50 000 - Locations
Description
The backdrop ‘Location potential of groundwater-dependent terrestrial ecosystems’ shows areas with the abiotic potential to establish groundwater-dependent terrestrial ecosystems on a medium scale (1:50,000) for the whole of Lower Saxony. Groundwater-dependent terrestrial ecosystems are an important habitat and refuge for rare and endangered animal and plant species. Groundwater-dependent terrestrial ecosystems are therefore under special protection and must be taken into account in water law and planning procedures.
The backdrop evaluates the abiotic location factors soil, groundwater, climate and land use, based on the soil map in scale 1:50,000 (BK50), climate data of the German Weather Service (DWD) for the period 1971 -2000 and the Digital Landscape Model 1: 25,000 (DLM25). The backdrop serves as an overview and represents all areas with a site potential, regardless of whether a groundwater-dependent biotope has currently been established at the designated sites or not.
High bog sites are designated separately, as they ideally have their own bog water body. Due to human intervention, however, even raised bog sites today cannot be excluded from a groundwater connection. In addition, the backdrop provides information on the protection status of the areas that are considered to be ‘sites of value for nature conservation’ within a protected area.
