Main structure: Castle biotopes globally
Description
The still visible castle grounds in the province are of great importance for the cultural history of South Holland. They also often form - as with their green character - rest areas in the urban area. To ensure that this unique cultural heritage is not lost, the province has established a so-called ‘castle biotope’.
The castle biotope consists of:
- the castle / castle grounds themselves, in the form of ruins, wall remains, one or more outbuildings, moat grounds, etc.
- the field of view, the space needed to experience the castle / castle grounds
- the basic structure to which the castle/castle site is linked: watercourse, road, or both
- the connector, if any, and any open space between the castle site and the basic structure (e.g. avenue, lawn)
- the main features of the original landscape context
- the remains of a possible country estate period, so far spatially related to the castle location
Global castle biotopes, established by PS as part of the Vision on South Holland - Space Regulation. This stock refers to the outer boundary of the biotopes and has descriptive attributes of the biotope.
