AQUACROSS. Knowledge, assessment and management of aquatic biodiversity and ecosystem services through EU policies
Description
Biodiversity-rich aquatic ecosystems are home to a wide variety of species and habitats, which provide numerous economic and social benefits to European citizens. Many of these valuable ecosystems are at risk of irreversible damage due to human activities and pressures, including pollution, invasive species, overfishing and climate change. These pressures threaten the sustainability of these ecosystems, the provision of their services and, ultimately, human well-being.
Existing Community policies have not been able to halt and reverse the downward trend in terms of biodiversity in aquatic ecosystems. The broad set of policies such as the Water Framework Directive and the Marine Strategy Framework Directive stipulate that sustainable management solutions require coordination and cooperation between different policy areas. In addition, for the management of freshwater, marine and coastal ecosystems, it is necessary to propose commercial solutions promoting public-private participation in an innovative way.
The AQUACROSS project, developed between 2015 and 2018, responds to urgent social and economic needs, addressing policy challenges of integrated value and adding perspective to the use of available knowledge.
The project consists of 8 case studies that provide different approaches to obtaining information and management derived from this knowledge.
As far as Spain is concerned, we focus on Case Study 2: Analysis of transboundary aquatic ecosystems and green/blue infrastructure in the Mediterranean Intercontinental Biosphere Reserve: Andalusia (Spain) Morocco. This case study is described in detail in the reports included.
