Flooding – Flood image primary tides (2020)
Description
This map shows the floodable area and maximum water depths that can occur after a breakthrough of primary flood defences.
Primary flood defences are dikes, dams, dunes and works of art that provide protection against outdoor water. Outdoor water is water from the large rivers, large lakes and the sea. The primary curvatures are laid down and standardised in the Water Act. A breakthrough of a primary flood defence usually causes a greater flooding than a breakthrough of a regional flood barrier.
The dike routes with the status of a primary flood defence are laid down in the Water Act. The Water Act also lays down the safety standard per route. The water defence managers (water boards and Rijkswaterstaat) are responsible for the care of these flood defences.
The map with the flood image after breakthrough of the primary flood defences is compiled from the primary flood images from Riskkaart.nl that follow from the National Database Overflow Data (the source database for flood scenarios in the Netherlands) and has been supplemented by three additional scenarios developed in the Delta Programme 2014. These three scenarios fall within the management area of Hoogheemraadschap Schieland and Krimpenerwaard and have been added an additional scenario of the external dike area (scenario ID 11728) and breakthrough of the Dutch at Capelle (scenario ID 18728) and Gouda (scenario ID 18728).
