Description

The information contained in this dataset is related to the PECAN0221 campaign carried out between 21 February and 9 March 2021. This is the representation of the spatial distribution of observations of human activities (garbage and craft) collected during periods with sampling effort. The area comprising the data provided covers the Canary Islands continental shelf (DMCAN). It is a set of data composed of specific entities, where each element represents observations of human activities (garbage and boats) collected during the periods of the campaign with sampling effort. Each object has associated a series of alphanumeric variables such as: area of study, transect, segment, campaign, latitude, length, date, time, group, sighting number, code, description, MSFD code (corresponding to the official MSFD list), group number and observations. The development of this set of geographical information began in 2021, thanks to the participation of the IEO marine mammal group in the campaign. The collected geographical information is stored in a spatial database. These works have been financed through the Project “Technical Scientific Advice for the Protection of the Marine Environment: Evaluation and Monitoring of Marine Strategies, Monitoring of Marine Protected Areas of State competence (2018-2024)”. Marine Strategies are the marine environment planning instrument established under Directive 2008/56/EC (as amended by EU Directive 2017/845) establishing a framework for Community action for marine environment policy (Marine Strategy Framework Directive), and their main objective is to achieve the Good Environmental Status (BEA) of our seas. The 11 descriptors of Good Environmental State constitute the basis on which the description and determination of the good environmental status of the marine environment is based. They are established by the Directive in Annex I. The marine assessment areas are located within the Marine Demarcations defined in the framework of the Marine Strategies of Spain, these Marian demarcations being the units used for notification to the European Commission (MRU).
