This is the entry for the documentation underpinning and supporting the EUNIS habitat classification.
The EUNIS habitat classification is a comprehensive pan-European system to facilitate the harmonised description and collection of data across Europe through the use of criteria for habitat identification. It is hierarchical and covers all types of habitat from natural to artificial, from terrestrial to freshwater and marine.
An extensive review of the EUNIS habitat classification was initiated in 2012 based on European vegetation plot data. The revised groups of the classification are coastal habitats, grasslands, heathland, forest and other wooded land, sparsely vegetated and vegetated man-made habitats. The review concerns codes, scientific names and descriptions. A new element of the revised classification is that indicator species are identified for level 3 habitat types. The revision of the groups were concluded after a consultation with EIONET and vegetation experts. The review is on-going and more groups will become available.
The data coverage is Europe to Ural including Caucasus for the vegetation plot data.
