EU bird sanctuaries (VSG) with peatland
Description
In accordance with Article 4 of the EC Birds Directive (79/409/EEC), the Member States (in the Federal Republic of Germany the Länder) are obliged to declare the most suitable areas in terms of area and number for species listed in Annex I to the Directive (Article 4(1)) and for migratory bird species (Article 4(2)) as special protection areas (SPAs, European bird protection areas) and to notify them to the European Commission as part of the Natura 2000 ecologically networked protected area system.
