Distribution of otters in MV, MTBQ mapping 2005 (grid representation)
Description
In winter 2004/2005, pre-defined control points were checked for evidence of the otter.
The mapping process is largely based on the standard method recommended by the European Section of the IUCN/SSC Otter Specialist Group (REUTHER et al. 2000).
A control point was defined in 822 quadrants of the measuring table sheets in M-V. Care has been taken to ensure that the probability of providing positive evidence is as large as possible (waters with attractive shore areas for the otter and bridge structures over waters) and that the control points are at a distance of 5-8 km.
The data for the individual control points are stored in the spatial data pool “Dissemination of otters in MV, MTBQ mapping 2005 (point representation)”(fiover05p.*).
From this database, the evidence was derived from the measuring table sheet quadrants (MTBQ) of the State M-V.
822 MTBQ have a control point (588 with positive detection, 234 without detection).
80 MTBQ do not have a control point. These are marginalised MTBQs with a predominant share of land in neighbouring countries or coastal waters, MTBQ where the control point could not be reached, and MTBQ where there is no appropriate control point due to water poverty.
