INTEMARES Benthic habitats of Banco de Galicia - Kappa

Description

The information contained in this data set corresponds to the spatial distribution of the benthic habitats of the Banco de Galicia. The distribution of these habitats was obtained by modeling (GAM) data on the presence and absence of these habitats and they were all united in a single map using as a threshold 'kappa'. The identification and definition of each habitat was carried out through the use of multivariate analysis techniques applied to data obtained with various extractive sampling techniques (dragging and dredging). A total of 19 otter trawl dredges, 29 beam bou trawls and 27 rock dredges were carried out. Biological results were integrated with morphosedimental characterization. The area covered by the data provided covers the waters and seabed of the Banco de Galicia (North Atlantic Demarcation) itself and of a set of seamounts and adjacent areas. It is a data set composed of polygonal elements, where each element represents a benthic habitat. Each object is associated with a series of alphanumeric variables that correspond to the different codes and nomenclatures of the different habitats in the different international and national lists or catalogues and benthic habitats. The preparation of this set of geographical information began during the development of the INDEMARES plan, thanks to the 3 oceanographic campaigns that were carried out between 2009 and 2011 within the framework of this project. The geographical information collected is stored in a spatial database. These works have been financed thanks to the LIFE IP INTEMARES Project (LIFE-IP INTEMARES - Integrated, Innovative and Participatory Management for N2000 network in the Marine Environment - LIFE15 IPE/ES/000012). This integrated project has the challenge of laying the foundations to effectively manage the marine areas of the Natura 2000 Network and complete the work and progress promoted within the framework of the LIFE + INDEMARES project, which managed to take a great step in terms of declaring new areas.
