Lithology (HAD)

Description

Geological overview maps generally show the distribution of rocks according to their age and the geological period of origin. However, for some questions and uses in the geoscientific field, it is useful to be able to read the nature of the rocks directly from maps. This purpose is served by lithological maps (Greek lithos = stone), in which the rocks are classified according to the way in which they were formed (genesis). Rocks are basically formed by geological processes in the earth (endogenous) and on the earth's surface (exogenous), whereby becoming and passing are closely connected. Atlas Table 1.5 distinguishes the large units loose sediments and sedimentary solid rocks (sedimentites), magmatites and metamorphites. The sedimentites are further subdivided according to their granularity in fine, medium and coarse grains and according to their genesis in chemical and organic rocks as well as clastic/chemical mixed rocks. The magmatites are divided into plutonites, volcanites and tuffe, the metamorphites into metasedimentes, metamagmatites and tektonites (including impact rocks).
