DAttE – Detection of attic extensions

Description

Vienna is one of those European cities that are currently characterised by strong growth and are therefore under pressure from high demand for housing. Attic extensions are one way to meet this demand. However, there is a lack of data to know which roofs have already been extended and to what extent. This knowledge is of interest to the city in two ways: Firstly, in terms of the distribution of potentials (a possible change in population density affects, for example, infrastructure and supplies) and secondly, in terms of material composition (the city as a material resource). The present application visualizes an intermediate step of a workflow to close this knowledge gap. LOD2 data from the city of Vienna are used and the roof shapes are analyzed with regard to slope and roof structures (the program was written in Grasshopper® for Rhino® [McNeel & Associates, R 2015]). The analysis shows a ratio between actual volume and maximum volume for the roof surfaces (as a hypothetical full extension with flat roof, regardless of possible restrictions by the Vienna Building Regulations, etc.). Finally, a color code defines the degree of expansion. All data has been carefully checked, however: Error and changes reserved. No liability is assumed for correctness. It is only a study based on publicly available data (see below). data source: City of Vienna – (2021): Generalized roof model (LOD2) Vienna, Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International.
