Ecological and Socioeconomic Vulnerability indices of the Andalusian coast in relation to sea level rise events
Description
Indices that are associated with key ecological attributes and socio-economic parameters of special interest that can be applied in the evaluation of the degree of affection of the coastal socio-ecosystem in the face of the effects of climate change. Two ecological indices are included; one related to outstanding natural values, calculated on the basis of the analysis of the protected natural areas present in each stretch of 500m. width along the coast, and another on biocenotic or phytocenotic diversity, based on the calculation of habitat biodiversity and structural diversity (vertical development and coverage of plant formations). On the other hand, the socio-economic indices calculated and mapped refer to the tourism sector (tourist places associated with beach lengths), agriculture (socio-economic interest and degree of exposure of crops), health (residential areas and distance to water bodies), the residential space itself (residential use value and degree of exposure), urban and infrastructure (use value and degree of exposure) and historical heritage (heritage value and degree of exposure). Explanatory texts and resulting cartographies are included as well as legends designed for correct reading. The values of the vulnerability indicators generated only attempt to assess the relative intrinsic susceptibility to an adverse event, and not the magnitude or probability of its occurrence, nor in any way attempt to quantify damage or costs. Any attempt to compare and associate the values of the indicators with the impacts must therefore be made with great caution, although, on the contrary, they indicate the potential areas where more detailed studies must be carried out in the future for a detailed assessment of the risks and impacts associated with the foreseeable rise in sea level. They also provide a reasonable starting point (alongside the CVI index, also integrated into REDIAM) for decision-making by managers and for contextualising adaptation measures.
