Accumulation of pressures that may cause hydrographic alterations and/or modifications in sedimentation in the South Atlantic Demarcation (EM SUD PRE Modification Sedimentation)

Description

The identification of areas that can potentially undergo hydrographic alterations and, in many cases, modification of sedimentation is carried out based on the following human pressures/activities: - Port and defence infrastructure - Retention of river flow in reservoirs and other regulatory infrastructure - Extraction of solids: exploitation of underwater deposits and port dredging - Artificial reefs and controlled sinking of wrecks - Dumping of dredged port material - Beach regeneration and creation of artificial beaches - Mussel growing bats The analysis has been carried out through a semi-quantitative index, which takes into account the presence or proximity of elements that can cause this type of impact. The selection of the cells for each of the pressures has been made according to the following criteria: - Containing an authorized place for the discharge of dredged material - Those containing some sand extraction point - Those that are less than 500 m from an artificial or regenerated beach - Those that are less than 100 m from some stretch of artificial coast - Those that are less than 500 m from a port - Those containing a sunken ship - Those containing some artificial reef - Those that are less than 2 km from the mouth of an altered river - Those containing a heavily modified body of water declared under the WFD - Those that are less than 100 m from some stretch of eroded coast The following formula has then been applied: MODIFICATION OF SEDIMENT= 0,1*[sunken vessel + artificial reef] + 0,25*[dragged material + sand extraction + artificial or regenerated beaches] + 0,5*[artificial coast + ports + rivers] + 1*[highly modified water mass + eroded coast] Areas with a high potential for hydrographic alterations and/or modification of sedimentation have been selected for cells classified by the ‘Very High’ range and areas with moderate potential for cells classified by the ‘High’ range: Very High: 3 to 4 / High: 2.2 to 3 / Medium: 1.5 to 2.2 / Low: 0.5 to 1.5 / Very Low: less than 0.5
