Description

Fisheries and Oceans Canada's (DFO) Atlantic Salmon Watch Program (ASWP) monitors reports from commercial and sport catches and collects information from voluntary observations of Atlantic salmon in British Columbia (B.C.) waters. In addition to data gathered from DFO’s monitoring activities, the program relies on information provided Indigenous, recreational, and commercial fishers, as well as fish processors, government, independent field biologists, and hatchery workers who report observations of Atlantic salmon. The program was established in 1991 to study the abundance, distribution and biology of Atlantic salmon that had escaped from salmon farms in B.C. Through the 1990s and early 2000s, this program was actively seeking voluntary reports and submission of captured Atlantic salmon from the public. DFO staff followed up on reports and verified them through photographs or biological samples where available. The monitoring from this time indicated that escaped Atlantic salmon were not successful in establishing feral populations, allowing for a reduction in proactive surveillance efforts. This report is no longer updated due to low numbers of verifiable reports and samples being submitted. A summary of reports made to the ASWP from 2005 to 2019 can be found below. Anyone who encounters an Atlantic salmon in B.C. waters is encouraged to report the observation or capture by calling the ASWP toll-free reporting line at 1-800-811-6010 or email [ASWP@dfo-mpo.gc.ca](mailto:aswp@dfo-mpo.gc.ca "aswp@dfo-mpo.gc.ca"). You will be asked where and when you caught the fish and if you wish to voluntarily donate it for research purposes, which provides valuable information to our scientific study.
