Marine Physical Environment: Nature of the Spanish Seabed
Description
The information contained in this dataset is a representation of the spatial distribution of sediments on the seafloor based on their granulometry, along with the spatial distribution of the outcropping rock. As the marine environment is an environment with many peculiarities and with marked differences with the terrestrial environment, one of them being the greatest difficulty and cost in terms of exploration and knowledge of this environment, there is a large amount of information about the marine environment, but its origin, quality, collection methodology, interpretation criteria and degree of elaboration are very varied, and on many occasions the classifications of the different alphanumeric variables are not standardized. This is the case of this set of information, where its particle size classification is marked by structuring the information according to the different sources of the information. It is a data set composed of polygonal elements, where each polygon represents a tripod of granulometry different from the polygons of its environment. Each polygon has associated a series of alphanumeric variables such as the CLASS that contains the particle size classification of the sediments, and the ORIGIN that stores the original source of the data. The area comprising the data provided covers the Spanish continental margin and deep areas. The development of this level of information began in 1997 and has since been updated quite frequently based on the collection of new information, and the documents collected are stored in GIS format, in ESRI's corporate geodetabase (SQL).
