Description
The fishing ground layer consists of a set of polygons that define, approximately, the traditional fishing areas close to the national territory of the Spanish fleet. In most cases the toponymies belong to the oral tradition of coastal populations engaged in fishing. The area it covers is the surrounding waters of the Canary Islands, the Iberian Peninsula and the African Atlantic coast. The data is a compilation of various publications and personal communications of fisheries researchers. The ‘DETAIL ORIGIN’ field of the database specifies the source in cases where it is known. This layer contains tabular information and the geometry of the fishing grounds, close to the coast, in which the Spanish fleet traditionally fishes. More than one stock may fish in the same fishing ground using the same or different fishing gear. For this reason, the same area may be designated by several names, and several fishing grounds may also overlap. The fishing grounds are considered as Feature Class, Polygon Layer, stored in ArcGIS format.
