Average monthly ISDN: average vegetation indices for the month
Description
The series of raster maps of monthly average vegetation indices of NDVI (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index), of the study of Monitoring the Annual Evolution of crops and Harvests contains the maps of vegetation indices with the average value of each month, obtained for each agricultural campaign and each month of study, for the entire area of the regions studied.
To obtain these results, the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, Food and Environment (MAPAMA) has a system for monitoring the evolution of rainfed crops and grasslands, based mainly on the information provided by vegetation indices (NDVI) generated with daily satellite images NOAA-AVHRR. This system, which has been in operation since 1993, pays special attention to the detection and localization of drought situations throughout successive agricultural years, in order to provide for the necessary measures to be taken to mitigate its effects. The system is in operation between the months of January and June, the period in which the studied crops are developed.
The study is carried out in the autonomous communities of Navarra, Aragón, Cataluña, Castilla y León, La Rioja, Madrid, Castilla-La Mancha, Comunidad Valenciana, Andalucía, Región Murciana, Extremadura and Baleares, since they are the ones that practically comprise all the rain-fed crops and grasslands.
