Description

How many people are (or have been) in receipt of a supplementary pension? As of 1 January 2023, 4,291,427 employees and self-employed persons were enrolled in a supplementary pension plan through their current or previous employment. They are therefore both persons who are still actively earning a supplementary pension and persons who have accrued entitlements in previous employment. This supplementary pension is paid to them from the moment they leave the pension. 3,177,901 members are still acquiring additional pension rights through their current employment. 74% of all employees and self-employed persons with supplementary pension rights are therefore "actively" affiliated to a pension plan. 92% of all members of a supplementary pension scheme live in Belgium. 341.197 members are not domiciled in Belgium and no address is known for around 2% of them. The number of people who will receive a supplementary pension in retirement has been steadily increasing over the past five years. As of 1 January 2023, there were 165,763 more members with an additional pension than the previous year. The percentage increase over the past six years has been greatest in the 16-25 age group. Compared to January 1, 2018, there are now 44% more members in this age group.
