Flooding – Flood probability of primary and regional tides (2020)

Description

Since 2019, DPRA has been advising the new map ‘Place-related flooding opportunity’ for the theme of Flood Control. The map provides insight into the chance of a flood with a water depth > 20 cm and thus provides a better insight into flood risks than just the maximum water depth maps, which only present the “horror image” of the maximum water depths (the most extreme event). The “place-based flood risk” will thus help in the theme of consequence reduction Floods. The primary barriers protect the hinterland from flooding. These barriers have a standard that indicates the probability of failure per dike trajectory. Based on these standards, the flow scenarios are derived and have an exceeding frequency equal to or less than the standard. It may occur that certain locations in the hinterland may be affected by more than one flood scenario. When this happens, the likelihood of these specific locations being affected by a flood increases. That’s why it’s called place-related flooding opportunity. The site-based flood probability map is made up of scenarios following the breakthrough of the primary flood defences. This is compiled from the primary flood images from the National Flood Data Database (the source database for flood scenarios in the Netherlands). For this purpose, only ROR (Flood Risk Directive) scenarios have been used with the frequency of exceedances corresponding to the standards of the corresponding standard of the dike pathways. Some parts of the map do not match the flood image primary barrier. This is because some scenarios have been archived and these could not be taken into account for the development of this map.
