Signalling map Peat oxidation
Description
The signalling map peat oxidation signals which areas in the province of Zuid-Holland are (strongly) sensitive to peat oxidation. Groundwater levels in the Netherlands are controlled for different types of use of space. Cows, for example, sink into the peat if the soil is too wet. However, level control results in the ‘dry’ peat soil falling above the groundwater level; by recessing the soil and oxidation of organic matter. Soil subsidence and groundwater levels end up in a vicious circle: the soil drops, the level has to be lowered, the soil drops... and so on. The peat oxidation map shows where the soil is (strongly) sensitive to decline due to peat oxidation.
