Pension gap for statutory pension
Description
In 2022, 114 294 people received their retirement pension for the first time, which they did not accumulate with a survivor’s and/or separated or divorced spouse’s pension. This group of people who have recently taken their retirement pension is 57% male and 43% female. The average retirement pension for women who have recently taken their retirement pension is EUR 1.778 and for men EUR 2.184. The gender pension gap is therefore €406, or 19%. For those who have recently taken their pension, women's retirement pension is on average 19% lower than that of men. The pension gap is based on average pension amounts and gives at a glance the difference between the average pension of women and that of men. In order to better understand this pension gap, the illustration below shows the full pension distribution of men (left) and women (right) who have recently taken their retirement pension and who are behind these averages. On the x-axis, we find the amount of the pension (retirement pension) divided into classes of EUR 500. The axis gives the percentage of men and women with a retirement pension in the relevant pension class. To better understand the distribution of statutory pensions between men and women and the possible reasons for this pension gap, we also present the pension gap among people who have recently taken their retirement pension according to the characteristics of their pension and their personal situation. For people who have recently taken their retirement pension and only have an employee’s pension, we also look at the pension gap according to certain career characteristics.
