Cartography Habitat 1180 INTEMARES_A4 Mud volcanoes of the Gulf of Cadiz

Description

The information contained in this dataset corresponds to the spatial distribution of the benthic habitats identified in the Habitat Directive and represented in the Natura 2000 Network (Habitat 1180). Mapping could not be carried out using modeling techniques due to the absence of spatial data on many important variables that influence the presence of this habitat (concentration of methane and hydrogen sulfide in the sediment, presence of autigenic carbonates, etc.). Therefore, the mapping was obtained by interpretation using exhaustive analysis of the geomorphology data of the bottom, sedimentological and sampling in the area in addition to the use of underwater images obtained with the ROV LIROPUS and the photogrammetric sleigh HORUS. In Campo Somero of the SCI for ‘Volcanes de mud del Golfo de Cádiz’, due to a higher sampling rate in recent years, a much more detailed study of habitat 1180 (diapyral ridges, diapyro-volcano complex, mud volcanoes, etc.) has been obtained. Due to the large extent of the Deep Field of the SCI and the absence of large expanses of important spatial data for the mapping of this habitat type, the detailed spatial distribution of habitat 1180 concentrated on the different known mud volcanoes (Aveiro, St. Petersburg, Almazán) as well as on the diapyro-volcano complexes (Geraldine, Hesperides and Magellan). It is a data set composed of polygonal elements, where each element represents a benthic habitat. The area covered by the data provided covers the seabed of the SCI ‘Sludge volcanoes of the Gulf of Cadiz’, both the Somero Fluid Expulsion Field (the area closest to the coast) and the Deep Fluid Expulsion Field. Each object has associated a series of alphanumeric variables such as the study area, the type of habitat that was assigned according to the studies, the area of each polygon as well as different fields with the different codes and nomenclatures of the different habitats in the different lists and / or national and international catalogs and benthic habitats. The preparation of this set of geographical information began within the framework of the LIFE IP INTEMARES project between 2019 and 2022 and taking as preliminary data, for a better mapping, the progress made during the LIFE + INDEMARES stage (2010-2012). The geographical information collected is stored in a spatial database. These works have been financed thanks to the LIFE IP INTEMARES Project (LIFE-IP INTEMARES - Integrated, Innovative and Participatory Management for N2000 network in the Marine Environment - LIFE15 IPE/ES/000012). This integrated project has the challenge of laying the foundations to effectively manage the marine areas of the Natura 2000 Network and complete the work and progress promoted within the framework of the LIFE + INDEMARES project, which managed to take a great step in terms of declaring new areas.
