Geophysical aerial measurements, magnetic fields (display service)
Description
The geophysical aerial measurements, magnetic fields display measured variations in the total magnetic field after subtraction of the geomagnetic reference field (DGRF 1965.0) and are based on airborne measurements at an altitude of 30/60 metres during the years 1960-2005. Aerial magnetic data are mainly used in connection with geological mapping and exploration and provide information on the structural features and structure of bedrock regardless of soil and water depth. The information is of great importance as only a few percent of Sweden's bedrock is exposed, the other parts are covered by soil or water.
The magnetic properties of the earth's crust are determined mainly by the presence of the magnetic mineral magnetite in the various rocks. The depth and surface distribution of different rocks can be interpreted from the patterns in the anomaly map. Rock propagation, ironing and fall directions can be determined using different geophysical interpretation techniques. Faults and their relative movements can be seen as displacements in the magnetic pattern.
The magnetic field is expressed in the unit nanoTesla (nT).
