Forestry chiroptera in Andalusia. Population management systems. Year 2012. Final report
Description
Study for the improvement of knowledge about forest chiroptera in Andalusia published in 2012. The fieldwork has been carried out in the breeding periods of 2009, 2010 and 2011. Prepared by the Biological Station of Doñana (CSIC) as a result of the Collaboration Agreement signed with the Ministry of Environment of the Junta de Andalucía.
The reproduction of all species of forest bats known in Andalusia ('Myotis bechsteinii', 'Barbastella barbastellus', 'Nyctalus leisleri', 'Nyctalus lasiopterus') is observed, highlighting the location of an important breeding population of 'Myotis mystacinus', a species unknown until now south of the Central System.
The project has identified three major areas of special interest in Andalusia for forest bats: Cazorla-Segura-Las Villas-Castril-Huéscar (Jaén-Granada), Alcornocales-Grazalema-Genal-Sierra de las Nieves (Cádiz-Málaga) and Aracena (Huelva). To these must be added one of lesser interest and extension: Sierra Quintana-Despeñaperros (Jaén), which is probably a peripheral part of an area of similar importance to the previous ones and whose main core is Sierra Madrona in Ciudad Real. In addition, it is necessary to include three small nuclei that house large noctule breeding colonies located in urban parks of Seville and Jerez as well as in Doñana.
The total area of these areas (667,000 ha) is 14.8% of the forest area of Andalusia. Predictive models of potential distribution basically coincide
with the areas found although they indicate the existence of some other interesting small areas that may be of insufficient size to ensure the viability of the populations.
