Gravel road class

Description

Gravel roads are classified into two categories: busy and networked gravel roads and basic gravel roads. The classification is based on the traffic volume limit KVL 150 and the classification aims at long uniform periods. Networkly significant roads can be upgraded to the upper gravel road class, even though the KVL is below 150. The classification of gravel roads is determined by the Centres for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment, which submit classification proposals to the Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency, which approves the classifications. The definition of network-significant roads can be presented in the significance reports of the ELY Centres. The Centres for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment (ELY Centres) have prepared road significance reports partly from different starting points. Gravel road categories are so-called continuously valid, i.e. they are not defined separately every year. However, the gravel road categories can be revised if necessary, if the environment (e.g. building or upgrading a road or substantially changing traffic) is affected. The ELY Centres are responsible for maintaining the information. The target category is not versionable. The information covers gravel roads (excluding streets and pedestrian and cycle paths).
