Water structure mapping NRW

Description

The water structure (also: Water morphology or hydromorphology) encompasses the morphological properties of a body of water. These include, for example, the course of the water (meaning, stretched), the sohl substrate (gravel, sand), the flow velocity, the shore quality, etc. Structural diversity also means biodiversity, since different habitat requirements of different aquatic organisms can be met. The water structure was recorded in NRW at a distance of 100 m. A corresponding mapping instruction of the LANUV is available. The water structure class characterises the water structure in comparison to the potential natural habitat-typical state. Changes in aquatic structure have an impact on the extent to which a body of water is able to change its bed in dynamic processes and serve as a habitat for aquatic and amphibious organisms. The data shown here comes from the national mapping 2011-2013 as well as the updated data collected between 2016 and 2020 as part of re-mapping of the water structure. New mappings refer to mappings of newly created or altered water trajectories (e.g. through hydromorphological transposition measures) without available water structure data; Post-mapping refers to replacing, picking up or complementing existing water structure data.
