Description
The soil serves the plants as a reservoir for water and nutrients. In order to describe the size of the memory, the effective root space or the effective rooting depth (We) is determined. The We is the potential exhaustion depth of the soil water available to plants, which can be maximally extracted from the soil by plant roots in dry years. The map of the ‘Effective rooting depth of the soil’ shows the size of the root space in dm, classified in 6 stages. The We depends on the texture, the storage density, the humus content, the stratification and the use of the soil as well as the groundwater level.
