Soil fitness card — fitness for building
Description
This map shows the suitability of the subsurface in the province of Utrecht for (traditional) construction. The term “traditional” refers to structures made of stone or concrete with a foundation on steel or piles, and infrastructure (roads) without pile foundation. The starting point for mapping is that the greater the investment in the foundation, and/or the higher the potential management costs, the less appropriate a location is considered. The card is a combination of the setting sensitivity card and the card of the minimum foundation depth. The image of the suitability card is determined in particular by the differences in the sensitivity of setting. The foundation depth map adds spatial nuances in particular in western peatlands, which are very sensitive to settling due to thick clay and peat packages. The legend of the map has a relative scale. Like ‘sensitivity’, ‘fitness’ is not to be indicated in generally applicable quantified classes. This becomes possible, however, if one method of construction is established, for which the suitability is determined. For the municipality of Vijfheerenlanden, which has been part of the province of Utrecht since 1 January 2019, no data is yet available.
