Description
DEFINITION: The road address system is used to determine the location of the register data in the database and terrain. The road address system comprises road addresses at a given time and a description of the connections between roads (road register nodes and interfaces). The actual road address is based on four identification data, which allow any point on the road to be located within a metre, measured along the road from the beginning of a given section of the road. This identification is the road number, the road section number, the road track number and the distance from the beginning of the road section. In addition, for certain types of data, information is used to specify the location on behalf of the road address, and part of the pavement data is collected on the basis of the bandwidth in relation to the direction of growth of the road address. In addition to the number, each road has its own name.
Road number maps:
The Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency produces road number maps every year on 1 January of the situation. The road number map shows the roads and parts of the road address system with numbers, as well as the locations of the allocation points. Road numbers are used as a location address and are visible to road users in signposting. Road numbering is based on road categories and connection intervals formed by the road network, while road part numbering divides the road into shorter sections to be managed.
According to their commercial significance, roads are classified as highways, carriers, sub-regions or connections.
Highways (1-39), serve national and inter-provincial long-distance traffic.
The main roads (40-99), complement the highway network and serve traffic in the counties.
The regional roads (100-999), serve traffic in the sub-regions and connect them to the dominance and proximates.
— Other roads which do not fall within the above-mentioned categories of road are included in the associations.
The most significant 4-digits may appear on a case-by-case basis. 5-digit and possibly larger series of numbers do not occur outside the registers.
The Ministry of Transport and Communications is responsible for the numbering of national and rail roads, the Transport Infrastructure Agency is responsible for the numbering of regional roads and the traffic and infrastructure area of the local ELY Centre is responsible for the numbering of connections. The municipality is responsible for providing the road name related to the address system for different sections of roads, streets and private roads.

On roads, the E-number is only in the position of an additional number and a kind of route guide, as all E-roads in Finland also have a national road number visible in the signpost.
Roads run through urban management areas, which means that street sections will also be included in the road address system. The road number maps have distinguished street sections with road numbers using the imaging technique.
