Accumulation of pressures that can cause the entry of nutrients into the Strait and Alboran Demarcation (EM ESAL PRE Nutrients)
Description
In order to identify the areas with the highest nutrient input (nitrogen and phosphorus) of the Strait and Alboran Demarcation, a spatial analysis of the sources described in section 2.6 of the Pressure and Impact Analysis of the Demarcation has been carried out. Using 5 by 5 minute meshing, the following cells have been selected:
- Those less than 500 m from an authorised dumping site for dredged material.
- Those that coincide with EMEP cells with higher nutrient loads (those that add up to 20% of the total pollution, starting the sum from highest to lowest).
- Presence of aquaculture facilities.
Those that are less than 2 km from the mouth of a river.
- Those less than 2 km from an urban wastewater discharge.
- Those that are less than 2 km from some industrial discharge with nutrient load.
- Those that intersect with some body of coastal water to which nutrients arrive by diffuse pollution.
- Those that overlap with some coastal water body that does not achieve good status by phytoplankton in compliance with the WFD.
- Those that are less than 2 km from a river that does not reach good status by phytoplankton in compliance with the WFD.
- Those less than 2 km from any transitional water body that does not achieve good status by phytoplankton in compliance with the WFD.
Once all the elements have been integrated, the index has been calculated using the following formula:
NUTRIENT INDEX = 0,25*[Dregged material landfills + atmospheric depositions with high nutrient concentrations + aquaculture facilities + urban discharges less than 200 t N total/year + diffuse pollution less than 2 t N total/Km2/year] + 0.5* [rivers discharges + industrial discharges + diffuse pollution greater than 2 t N total/Km2/year] + 0.75*[rivers or trancision waters that do not reach good status in phytoplankton + urban discharges greater than 200 t N total/year] + 1*[coastal waters that do not reach good status in phytoplankton]
The result is a mesh of probabilities of nutrient inputs. Areas of potential nutrient accumulation have been selected from the cells classified by the ‘Very High’ and ‘High’ ranges of meshing. In addition, the previous analysis has been completed with the work carried out within the framework of other directives (Water Framework Directive, Waste Water Directive and Nitrates Directive), applying the following criteria:
Very High: Major 1,75 / High: 1.25 to 1.75 / Medium: 0.5 to 1.25 / Low: 0.5 to 1.25 / Very Low: less than 0.5
