Photos in the archive of Hans Himmelheber (1908-2003) at the Rietberg Museum
Description
The Rietberg Museum is the only museum of non-European art in Switzerland. The internationally renowned collection houses important works from Asia, Africa, America and Oceania.
Hans Himmelheber took more than 15'000 photographs on his travels. These images are important visual documents of the phenomena he studied. The photographs also provide us with valuable information about their context of origin and the persons depicted. In addition, the photographs provide a starting point for critical postcolonial questions. Because Himmelheber has often given his cameras out of his hand, the authorship of some photographs can no longer be seen. Certainly, among the photographs taken by assistants, members of his family or his most important confidants on site.
In 2013, the Heirs Community Hans Himmelheber handed over the photo archive to the Museum Rietberg and financed its refurbishment. When providing photographs digitally, we adhere to the following guidelines:
Wherever possible, the persons depicted in the photographs were identified and their names were recorded.
In order to clarify the contemporary historical context of the photographic moments, details of the date and place of recording are as precise as possible.
Photographs that violate the dignity of the persons depicted have been blocked. These include situations in which the persons depicted do not possess any power of action in the photographic moment, such as photographs of prisoners, dying persons or persons who have been subjected to violence.
In addition, photographs were blocked that were taken in places and/or exhibited objects which, in the context of origin, were only accessible to a small, inaugurated circle of authorised persons. This includes, for example, only initiated rituals or rooms.
Photographs of women and girls depicted in an erotic way and photographs of undressed children are also inaccessible.
Original notes by Hans Himmelheber on individual photos are marked by quotation marks. We have deleted offensive or discriminatory words.
