These may include discharges, water withdrawals, artificialisation of aquatic environments, fishing catches, etc. In the context of the implementation of the Water Framework Directive (WFD), the concept of ‘pressure on media’ is part of the conceptual framework of the DPSIR model (‘Driving forces – Pressures – State – Impacts – Responses’, or ‘Driving forces or activities – Pressures causing a change of state in space and time – State describing media – Impacts, consequences of actions – Responses or corrective actions’) used by the European Environment Agency. The pressures generated can be classified according to their impact on the aquatic environment by distinguishing those that modify its quality, its hydrology, its hydromorphology or its biology. They can also be classified according to whether they act directly on the aquatic environment (point or diffuse discharges, pollution and sampling) or indirectly (land uses, hydromorphological alterations, etc.). The study of pressures makes it possible to limit impacts on the environment and nuisances, to better manage resources and to protect the living environment.
