WFD Groundwater Bodies (INSPIRE harmonised)
Description
Inspire harmonised dataset of the national Water Framework Directive (WFD) Groundwater Bodies. In the Water Framework Directive, a groundwater body is an important unit on which the water manager must report. A groundwater body is a coherent groundwater mass. The Water Act has interpreted this concept more broadly than, for example, the Water Framework Directive or the Groundwater Directive. In the European directives, the definition is limited to water that is located below the soil surface in the saturated zone, or all water below the groundwater level. The Dutch legislation does not make this distinction. In the Water Act, all water that is free in the soil is groundwater. The Decree on water quality requirements monitoring 2009 (Bkmw 2009) does contain the more limited European definition for groundwater. Only the water that is in the saturated zone is groundwater. This is the focus of the groundwater objectives of the Water Framework Directive and the Groundwater Directive. All groundwater in the Netherlands belongs to a groundwater body. In the Netherlands, 23 groundwater bodies are distinguished. Its designation and management lies with the provinces.
